Something I learned to appreciate this year, was how influential my family has been in my life. They supported me through so much and I don't think I could've ever made it this far without them. This year has been especially important in showing me just how much they care.
This summer started with my graduation party. I invited a bunch of people but those who were really willing to come, were my family. I saw cousins and uncles and aunts I hadn't seen in a while. From the youngest in my family, to some of the oldest, I could see that I had people who cared enough to support me.
The Fourth of July was another family party day, this one hosted by my cousins. There were a lot of their friends there too, but I found myself gravitating toward my family members. I mostly spent the party inside, talking to my younger cousins. They're growing up so fast and it was wonderful seeing them again.
But, this summer wasn't all smiles. The final family event was a funeral. My grandmother's sister died suddenly and it took quite a toll on the family. One thing I can say, is that the family was brought together again. My aunt's home was overflowing with people when we went to visit her kids. The wake was held in a large church, and every pew was filled. The funeral full, as well.
This summer, I learned the importance of family. They are the only people you can really depend on to stick with you through thick and thin. Whether you're brought together through events or tragedies, it's important to appreciate your literal Day Ones.
